Getting Started--Need Some Advice

Postby Muying » Tue May 06, 2014 1:32 pm

Hi all,

I'd love to learn how to fight properly with a sword, but could really use some help on getting started.

My problems are that I'm pretty weak physically and have no access to gyms or trainers, as I travel constantly, and gyms aren't a big thing in my country (China). Finding sparring partners is not an easy task as well.

Luckily I will be going to London in a few months and stay there for a while, so hopefully will be able to take some good classes. My question is then--what should I do to best prepare myself for the teaching there? It seems that I need to build on some strength first, but what are my options? Regular cardio exercise, or learn some basic boxing techniques and hit the punching bag (if I can keep one) as hard as I can?

I hope this is the right place to post my questions. Without any workout experience (besides some yoga stuff) I really have no idea what is best for me at this moment.

What are your suggestions? Thanks.

Hi Muying.

There are quite a lot of HEMA clubs in London, so you should have no difficulty finding one that suits you. You should be able to find out about the different London clubs on this London-based forum: http://www.fioredeiliberi.org/phpBB3/index.php

As for training in advance, strength training would certainly help, although it is not essential. Some good advice can be found on these two blogs:

I hope these links will be useful :)
