Hi David,

you don't have to have a basket or cup hilt to learn rapier, something with just a cross with work. You could make a cup out of Leather as Casper did. Also, Ray Brunk did a couple of wooden rapiers that he has pictures posted to the elist. Worst case senario is that I can help you put something together here in Utah before the event. One of the fiberglass wasters don't take a lot of time to build. If you go with a wood dowel, use a 48" long one.

For whatever its worth... I sent that link Brian Hunt posted to Scott at Darkwood and he says he has studied those stats and he makes his blades as close to those numbers as possible. Of course with the blunts there is the issue with the weight displacement being more in the hand because of the tip.

Hi Allen,

has he stated how much distal taper his blades have? and how stiff they are? how many pounds of pressure does it take before his blade starts to bend? I have been thinking about trying one of his blades for a steel blunt and making my own hilt. I am also looking at building a couple of cut and thrusts with the blades from his site. I hate to spend the extra 150 - 200 bucks to have someone build something I can do myself. At this time I am not set up to heat treat blades of this length, but in the future I intend to experiment with making my own blades as well.

Thanks.

Brian Hunt.

He did not state any specific stats to me but here is some info from his site on the Darkwood brand blades he makes. http://www.darkwoodarmory.com/DA-rapier-test.shtml

I dont know enough about metallurgy to make complete sense of it but you may have better luck. If nothing else, he seems to have been very patient and prompt in answering my questions. I'm sure if you email him he'd be willing to talk shop with you.

I would suggest that anyone intending to participate in the armoured longsword class bring a pair of safety glasses(fencing masks are even better) and a good pair of protective gloves.Halfswording is hard on the knuckles and the point of the swords spend a great deal of time about the face.

Just wanted to bring this back to the front page and to remind everyone to check back on our website next week for a complete, and hopefully final schedule of events.

I'll sticky this post to keep it on the front page Stew. This is going to be a great event!

Hi Shane,

Thanks

If you have armour definitely bring it to use! The only potential problem may be that we can't find an equal number of armoured participants and it may be dangerous for non-armoured guys in Tshirts to be grappling with a multi-sharp-plated armoured fencer during the class. Worse case, I'd be happy to take time afterwards to work the techniques with anyone in armour so you can get the full effect.

Do we have a schedule complete with times and such done yet? As soon as I get that I can plan my time off work and then PAY you guy$!

I also have a few pieces of armour I can bring and let people wear if they wish.

Woah -- thanks for the heads up on equipment. I need to get some gloves that don't have exposed finger tips.

it may be dangerous for non-armoured guys in Tshirts to be grappling with a multi-sharp-plated armoured fencer

Yeah, I lost a good piece of skin off of a finger doing that momentarily. Didn't take any effort at all.
