Backup daggers in longsword fights

Postby JeanryChandler » Tue Mar 22, 2005 10:53 pm

Since they presumably did it 'in the day', we have started sticking daggers in our belts or waistbands when sparring with longswords. This has led to some interesting situations during binds, a couple of which we captured on film this weekend.

Wondering if anyone else is doing this and what are your thoughts on the historical validity, fechtbuch references to this if any (I haven't noticed any but haven't really looked yet) technical advice or critique also welcome of course.

Some of the folks in our study group do this all the time. It's a good reality check to close and come to grips, maybe "disarm" the other guy and take him to the ground, then find a dagger in your face!

Jeanry, just a question about the video; Is it in "slow motion" or something? When I play it, the movement seems to be about half speed.

It can certainly add a different twist during the fight, just ask Randall about that

I was too busy trying to take him down gently while he removed my own dagger and stabbed me in the back with it. A lesson I never forgot

No, it's not half speed, maybe you've got the wrong video codec or something, or maybe we're just slow! It's definately not our top intensity of sparring, more what we would call 'free-play'. I just watched it again and it looks normal speed to me though.

Ernie ("so I wasn in this bus station") Perez of the Dallas/Ft. Worth study group uses this to great effect. He might be able to share some insights.

Watch Tim closely, he carries two daggers on his person at all times when fencing regardless of his primary weapon. If he sticks you, I told you in advance and you have but yourself to blame
