Which Weapon?

What off-hand weapon would be best be used for defending(not a shield) with a one-handed, slightly long, curved sword(falchion?).

I would say a dagger since you are dissallowing shields, therefore a buckler would also be out.

HIstorically probably a bare hand, followed perhaps by a dagger.

yeah i guess I'd keep the arm totally out of the way (behind the back like the manuals show) with dagger in hand in case I was able to close. If i needed to grip them, a knife would be easy to drop.

Why would you drop your dagger to grip someone? You can use the dagger to grab; just hook them with it. Pushes are also easily done.

Alot of dagger counters require both hands on the blade or pommel.
