Cold Steel Longsword

Postby Jason Taylor » Thu Apr 12, 2007 11:50 am

I was looking for a low-to-mid-range sharp for test cutting purposes, both for me and my study group to benefit from, and I came across this one from Cold Steel: http://www.thebladeshop.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1853.

I have a Cold Steel smallsword, which is a very nice piece of work--good balance and so forth. But though I know all the Cold Steel stuff cuts (I've seen some of their marketing hype/propaganda, and it all involves hacking at tatami and splitting the skulls of dead cattle, or putting the greatsword through the roof of a car or something), I don't know if it's a good sword for me.

They call it a "hand-and-a-half" sword, which I know is another common name, but I'm not sure if the specs on the page are close enough to a longsword or not (the acceptable ranges are fuzzy for me). Also, if anyone's handled one, what's the balance point lie, is it durable, is it really as sharp as they say it is, etc.? And how are the fittings? I don't like anything fancy, and it looks pretty basic from the picture, but you can't really tell without being up-close and personal with it.

Anybody who has might be able to tell me their impressions. THanks for any information you can provide.

The fact that it can cut though hard items be put under serious stress to breaking points and regain its shape , Have its tip, center and near cross guard areas hit rather hard and not snap is all good to me :D And the abilty to chop and get though a cattle rib rack is pretty awsome, I think. :D
