Newb here... Questions and partner search

Postby Michael Kelly » Mon May 17, 2010 8:52 am

So I recently discovered the ARMA site and WMA due to the 'Reclaiming the Blade' documentary. I must say I was completely unaware of the modern practice of classical western sword arts. The sword and its use has always held a fascination for me. I've looked at both modern western fencing and Japanese Kendo in the past but quickly dismissed them for their lack of realism. I like the sporting aspect of both but hate the limitations and unrealistic approach both take. Now with the discovery that there are people out there that take a realistic approach I am thrilled.

As the thread title states I am a newb and unfortunately I have virtually zero experience in WMA or sword arts. So I hope I can get guidance and help here. I know this question has probably been asked a hundred times on here already but for starters, beyond what is on the ARMA site, what would be some good starter reading materials for a newb like me? I am mainly interested in the longsword but would eventually like to delve into other weapons like the rapier and spear. Also I would like to know if there are any training groups around the following places...

- Omaha, NE
- Ft. Knox, KY
- Savannah, GA/Ft. Stewart, GA

I will be in Omaha for only another month before leaving for Ft. Knox for Armor school until March when I will report to Ft. Stewart as my permanent duty station. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hey Michael,

Glad to hear your interested! Man, I've still gotta see that film. As for starter material, I gotta say the best material for starting out is in the ARMA members area. There's instructional videos, instructional articles, podcasts, and a private e-list where members frequently help each other out with advice and discussion.

Other than that, I personally just recieved an order of David Lindholm's Knightly Art of the Longsword, which is an early attempt at interpreting Sigmund Ringeck's work. It's got some basic instructions that would be good for beginners, though there's lots of stuff in it that's pretty far behind the latest research into this art. It's got a great translation of Ringeck's work too.

As for practice partners, I know there's a really good group in Murray, KY (about 3 hours from Fort Knox), and I'm over in St. Louis which is about 4 hours away. I also know that David Kite, one of our highly esteemed interpreters is somewhere in Indiana, just north of there.

From Savannah GA, there's John Clements' group in Atlanta, and there's a study group in Twin Cities, MN which is about 6 hours from Omaha. Other than that, I wouldn't know.

Good luck,
