I returned yesterday from the ARMA International Gathering 2011 at Houston, Texas. I have been a member of ARMA for only 5 months and this was my first ARMA event and the first time I meet other ARMA members in person. The classes I took, which covered Longsword, Sidesword and Dagger, Spear, and Unarmed v. Dagger were excellent, and the instructors truly knew their subject material and were able to teach it well. Despite coming from the other side of the world and a different culture, I felt welcomed by the other members and it was a great experience to train with such a large number of different people who share the same passion for renaissance martial arts as I do. While there, I learned the most from sparring with the other members, especially those who knew their art far better than I. You get to see what right looks like, and you quickly learn what not to do to survive a longsword fight. I highly encourage all new members to go to an ARMA event as early in their training as possible. I look forward to attending as many future ARMA events as possible.
