Larger Danish axe...

Postby Eddie Smith » Fri Jun 03, 2016 3:51 am

I am trying to find a decent, but not overly expensive, Danish axe with a 12" edge. I prefer a flared edge but isn't overly important. The largest Danish axes I can find online all are about 10" and on 4' shafts. Anyone know where I might obtain one?
I know I have seen museum pieces that are 12" and I feel that size would be superb on a 6' haft. I have a nice 10" Edge on a 4' haft and it has done quite well over the years. It's edge has the slight flare, which as far as I know is historic but cuts differently than heads that are thin. Less slice, more bash, stronger edge however. I prefer the thin edges on smaller axes, but the flared edge I feel is better for two handed axes since it is stronger and risks less damage when hitting helmets and shields.
I also have a HUGE Danish axe I bought years ago from Albion I think...they did sell axes once upon a time I think. It has a 18" edge! Although there have been no historic finds that large as far as I'm aware there is a reference in the Laxdaela Saga. It mentions a Danish axe measuring 18 inches along its (so take the size with a grain of salt.) I bought it in part just to have a ridiculous size axe. it is on a haft that is 6 1/2 feet I think. lol Despite its size it is very thin in cross section and not as heavy as I expected, but still heavier than the English Bill I handled years ago at Hank Reinhardt's house (at an ARMA event btw)

Why do you want an axe that big? A 10 inch edge on a Danish axe sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

This one reviewed on my armoury is 9.93 inches.

Yes, I saw one in a museum on traveling and I think given how thin it was it would be impressive but not unweildable. as I stated I own a replica with an 18" head and it is a beast, but still not much worse than some halberds and other poll arms I have handled.
Here is a link to my FB page with a pic of the large axe mentioned. not sure if link will work so let me know if it doesn't
