sword & buckler compared to rapier & knife

hi, i am a peruser of forums like this and have had a question floating around my head for a while.
is there a direct link (or any similarities) between these two formats; sword / buckler and rapier / knife techniques. or was the sword design just too different to allow these styles to cross over or share forms. thanks ewan

"Sword and buckler" covers a wide assortment of weapons. The sword of the I.33 manuscript of c. 1295, the sword of Marozzo (i.e. cut & thrust), the shortsword of George Silver, and the rapier were all used historically with bucklers.
