Real combat videos

Postby Jay Vail » Sat Dec 25, 2004 6:35 am

I would venture to say that most people, including ARMA members, have never been in a street fight and so have no idea what real fights are like. The failure to understand and appreciate the dynamics of real combat underlies a lot of nonsense that has proliferated in the martial arts.

On the e-budo.com forum, Darren Lauer, a Canadian police officer, has helped remedy this lack of understanding. He's posed a large number of videos in which actual street fights have been filmed. I strongly suggest that every ARMA member view these videos.

Hey Jay

So far i have only watched about 4 of those video's, I have been in a couple of "street fight's", and they were pretty much what i was expecting, what i think is very noticeable is the amount of time all that happen's in, out of the four i watched the longest i think was about 1 minute 20 second's, not much time to evaluate and a whole lot of violence, doesn't allow much time to attack/defend yourself that is why i think it is important to realy go at the ringen/wrestling, dagger work at fully speed with full intent when we practice, i will watch the rest they take a bit to download i'm on dial-up.

Hey folk's

I finaly waded through those video's, the one thing i think these show is how hard it realy is to defend yourself in a "street fight" there is no real form of attack/defense in these, these people are relying on pure fear and aggression and just keep hitting. The guy who throw's the first punch rely's on the fact that he can keep hitting and his opponent cannot hit him back with much force or accuracy, notice also most of them at some point end up on the ground and like alway's the person on the bottom usualy take's a beating until they can escape and get up, most of the people in these are in my opinion terrified and have no clue what is going on and in a state of panic once they get hit and the blow's just keep coming they are overwhelmed and just try whatever they can to get there own hit in with no thought or they try to push the aggressor away, which only give's him more room to hit them and hold them at a good distance to get in a good hard punch's. The one Guy i think it was Mike taking on 4 he was amazing in how he started his elimination of the four he took out the one who looked most ready first(the guy with his hand's out in front in a fist) and nailed each one in turn, he knew what he was doing, he was one of the few i saw actualy think what he was going to do and do it.

Now do we train in a realistic way to deal with these kind's of situation's are we able to be this aggressive and still think even when we are getting hit?

Hi Jay

I think that the historical record validates this.
I've found that most people's conceptions of personal armed combat in the Renaissance is that it was employed something like what they have seen in movies, reenactment societies, and sport fencing. My belief from my research suggests it is something very different. And of course, that difference in reflected in what ARMA does and what is on our site. It was quick, vicious, and no no-nonsense with the emotional content of the participants being a significant factor. The whole point of training in systematic skills is so that you respond effectively under such sudden conditions of assualt.
