Guilin Study Group

Postby Maarten Franks Spijker » Sun Jan 27, 2008 3:54 am

In about a month I will begin making preparations to start a study group here in Guilin, South-West China. At first I expect to attract mainly Chinese, as Westerners are few and far between here (Discounting packaged tourists) and generally are not into martial arts. The focus of this study group will be practical European Armed Combat, specifically against the knife. I have printed out several works including Petter, Fiori (Novati + Getty), Talhoffer, Silver, and I'm working on several others. The purpose will to educate people about self defense, but also to demystify history.

I have been all over China and have found that little practical martial arts are being tought and that there is, especially, a huge void where knife fighting should be. China has a long martial history and it saddened me to see that much of it has been lost. Then I was introduced to the surviving combat treatises of my own corner of the world and decided that I would strive to bring back our glorious martial heritage, even prove that it wasn't by blind luck that we conquered the whole world, as they are prone to believe.

It won't be long before they start trying to re-create their martial heritage, but I'll leave that to them. I wouldn't call this so much an invasion as a project because if I was living anywhere else I would do the same. It's simply that I saw a void and wanted to fill it. And, hell, why not enjoy it along the way? There will be an emphasis on sparring and random unchoreographed attacks. At first I will arrange the sessions on a grassy field, but if things go well I will open a school.

Anyone is free to join. Let me know if you are interested either for short time practise and/or a long term study. The cost of living is cheap and can be supplemented by part-time work, if necessary. I already have a caving club, which is going well, and I hope the same for this. ;)

First, you need to log in with your full real name.

Secondly, you might consider contacting Lance Chen in Hong Kong. He practices historical western fencing.

Good luck! :D

Sorry, my full real name is in my signature. It is too long to fill in as my user name.

I figured there probably were already people doing WMA outside of the mainland, but that is 15 hours away from here. ;)
