JOLTS anyone?

Postby Eddie Smith » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:17 pm

I have been thinking a lot about the article entitled "getting punchy..." and was wondering if my thought would be correct...

Namely that these arts were battle field killing arts, in many cases, and if you are wrestling with someone on the battle field there are a few things you want. 1) to try and stay on your feet, perhaps why ground fighting is ignored in manuals. If you are on the ground you have to have to be deadly quick, and/ or need to get up quick, less a horse or man or whatever crush you. 2) You in a battle are looking to KILL an opponent, when able, but if you are to just injure him you want him down and out. 3) We know that kicks, punches, etc. where know and used

Putting this together I view a fighting style, generically speaking of Europe, which when unarmed was quite violent.

I imagine it, in a nut shell, would be like this..
not a lot of distance fighting, but rather using distance punches and kicks to open defenses and get into grappling range quick. Once grappling the "jolts" are used in conjunction with the grappling techniques, not apart from. for example if you are grabbed on the left shoulder and counter by grabbing his hand with your right and are going to use your left arm to push his leverage his head back to throw him, punch him in the face, or elbow his face, before dropping him. or even better 'jolt' his grabbing arm at the elbow with your palm, then hammer fist his nose to drop him.

Kinda violent, but does this get across how I am seeing it well enough, or shall I give more examples?'

If it is ok, then am I on base or not.?

Sounds like it fits my impression that their focus seems to be on gaining control of the opponent, which you can only do with some form of grappling. Punching and kicking seem to serve a supportive role for setting up the grapple and finishing the fight after it.

I agree with Stacy on this point about gaining control as priority, right after getting past threat range of whatever weapon if applicable. The 'jolts' are an imporatant set-up option.
