I've wondered about that plate (and similar ones from other texts) many a time. It's worth noting that these are men that almost certainly gave up or surrendered at some point, and they're simply being held here "until they can be put in irons."

I second that, it's most likely, but you never know <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> The locks are sound regardless of how they got there. Looks painful.

Hi Jake,
When the plate was first put up online (quite a few years back now), the interpretation was that all three men were lying on the ground, which led some to wonder how it worked, since when (I suppose) it was tried, the lock did not happen. Being familiar with similar versions of the lock used, I realized that the person executing the locks was standing up, and thus was effective. But yes, I think taking it in context with plates 143, 144 and 147 showing how to hold "captured" men (and noting the suggestion in the texts that you have some buddies to help you), that you are correct. I was just curious if Jay Vail knew something that was unworkable with the lock as shown. The other thing I note is that the text for the 145 Plate (unlike that for the other three), only mentions one man being put in the lock, and thus it might be that it is just being shown on both sides at once.

The third man is standing in my opinion and this very technique or a subtle variation is taught in many AMA schools as well. It is effective to a degree but the two guys on the ground had better be thoroughly whipped before you put them in that make-shift lock.
