Thanks for clearing that up Tomek. Certainly those throws looked as if they could end a fight if executed with real intent, I just wasn't sure if the scenes were cut off before any ground fighting in order to place more emphasis on the throws. Great stuff anyhow, I was impressed with the video when I first saw it a while back.

Are the throws and takedowns supposed to end the fight in themselves, and are there any techniques used once the fight goes to the ground? I didn't see any in the clip, so I'm not sure.

I wish it were so, but throws don't normally end the fight. You'll see that if you spend any time watching UFC, where they often perform some hard and nasty ones, but then the fight continues on the ground. This has been my experience with the throws as well. So when you throw, you must manage the fall so that you maintain the ability to obtain the top mount, or some other controlling position from which to finish the fight. The notion that you just throw them and that's it is largely an urban myth.

Hi Jay. I agree yet disagree to a certain extent. There was a great thread on this sort of subject a year or two ago (probably still on the site someplace) and one thing I remember being brought up by somebody was, like evereything, context. Yes, in many fights (especially a one on one situation) a throw won't end the fight in it self...but do the same throw durring a battle, skirmish, ect and the guy that was thrown is probably good as dead since he'll soon be getting stabbed with spears, hacked apart, kicked/trampled to death ect.

Perhaps it's with that context in mind that Ott wrote his teachings.

Ahh, groundfighting and the masters...always a good one for debate :)

In my experience the thrower has a far greater chance to access weapons than the one who just hit the ground.
I value greatly those throws which are likely to leave the fallen with no grip on me at all. If he is thrown and can cling or drag me down then I might be in as much trouble as he during the next few seconds.
This is why I don't much value hip-throws and such in my unarmed-but-weapons-based training.

Jared, I personally have thrown people in real fights where the throw did not end the fight, and we continued on the ground.

However, I have thrown people so that the fight ended. I know of others who have had the same experience. For instance, this week I talked with a defensive tactics instructor in a state prison system who used a technique illustrated in several different MnR manuals to defeat a shank (knife) attack by a prison inmate. He threw the guy hard and the attacker’s head struck the ground, which ended the fight.

It really depends on the circumstances.

Sirs,

I have pleasure to present you a 3-minute introduction into Ott's wrestling interpretation made by the ARMA-PL Ringschule Wroclaw (Poland).

Please find it here:
http://tesa.pop.e-wro.pl/ott2/
http://ringschule.wrzuta.pl/film/xatAY2 ... _s_trailer

Our new longplay film in DVD is an instructoring film, where we explain basic throwing of balance, basic breaks, counter-techniques against basic throws from our Master, Ott Jude.
Beside this in the film there are shown building exercises with partner's weight and aid, covering all muscle groups. This film is prepared for the gathering in Dijon 2007.

Our DVD-film is an introduction into a book about Ott's wrestling

Really nice!

I have your DVD, bought it during the Swordfish seminar in Malmö, and it is great, the only thing better was your class, one more reason to go to dijon!

Great work--even just this three minute video is a nice intro to show how unarmed can be very effective, which we work often here at OSU. I hope you will ask/allow that it to be linked as is to the main page!

Hi Tomek,
I really enjoyed your ringen video. I was wondering if I could post the trailer video on my web-blog. I will of course give ARMA Poland full credit and provide a link to the ARMA Poland website. Thanks, and keep up the great work!
