Paulus Hector Mair & Modern Combatives

Postby David_Knight » Sat Jul 30, 2005 2:03 am

A shorter, Mair-specific version of my forthcoming article on modern combatives parallels in the fechtbucher is now available online at: http://www.paulushectormair.com/CQC_PHM.htm

I highly encourage anyone who is having difficulty fighting anti-RMA xenocentrism (the belief that a particular aspect of one's culture is inferior to that found in other cultures) to point people to this article. It has certainly dropped a few jaws at my MMA school ("Bro, it's like.. German jiu-jitsu!"), and should hopefully help counter the sort of nonsense we saw in that "Ignorance in Western Martial Arts" thread a few weeks ago.

I will eventually expand it to include techniques from all the fechtbucher, but even when limited to Mair, it gets the point across very nicely.

good work, David.

ringen really is so jujutsu like. I too immediately noticed he similarities in Fiore and Talhoffer to Japanese ryu and chin na. In fact, once I showed Fiore's Pissani-Dosi MS to my instructor and we went through the book pointing to one picture after another, saying to each other "we do this, we do that . . ."

David-

That piece is tremendous, and much needed.

Not to mention that is shows both "the guard," and several chokes, both of which we've been searching for in RMA for a while. Fantastic.

Well done men, very interesting- now that's a direct link to all combatives, and further testifies that really there is nothing new under the sun. Cool, Cool stuff- Aaron

Hi David,

nice article, good job on this one. You know I am going to have to go and find each one of those plates now and translate them for reference's sake.

David:

I second (or is that third or fourth) the positive comments. It is no secret, of course, that our European ancestors had these high-level fighting skills, but it is very evident when a person collects them, as you have done, in one place.

This should be the final answer to ignorant statements that "the West had no martial arts."

Unfortunately, it probably will not.

Good work!

I'm really glad that my thread lead to something so useful and informative, which I didn't expect.

I was also amused to see direct quotes from me that I directly quoted from someone in a video game forum. Maybe he should recieve some credit in the article.

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. I'm very pleased with the way this article turned out.

Jeremy - I thought you'd appreciate that. Being both resourceful and impatient, I actually Googled that guy's quotes and found the site before I asked you where it was from. Should I add "Idiotic quotes by _______" to the credits?

On a related note, as a demonstration/homework exercise I gave my study group a while back, I had them go through the manuals they had access to and match the techniques up with those (videos and picture sequences) given on this excellent site: www.judoinfo.com and also marking the differences (mostly due to sportification)
I recommend doing so to any study group, familiar with asian systems or not.

Excellent link, Caspar. In the future I will work those judo throws into my more comprehensive version of this article.

Hey guy's

I actualy downloaded a couple video clip's of technique's from there(judoinfo) and showed them to Jaron Bernstein.

It is amazing how the same basic technique can be so useless once it is sportified, and the mindset changed to a game.

Nice article David! If some of these renaissance masters were alive today, I bet they'd do real well in UFC or Pride. I bet Mair could kick Chuck Liddel's butt!

As a student of Hapkido I have to say, this article delights me.

I recognize every single technique shown by Mair, as far as I can tell they're entirely identical.

I have terrible memories of the wrist displayed in E-4. "It's like [revving up] a motorcycle" In Hyuk Suh's son explained to me as he applied a twisting motion to my forearm after pinning me to the ground at a seminar. It's excruciatingly painful but being reminded of it always makes me chuckle for some reason.
