Looking for study partners/group

Postby Guest » Mon Feb 09, 2004 3:47 pm

Hi all.

Great forum! I came here looking for partners but got absorbed for the past three hours reading all of the great material already on here.

I have been studying WMA on my own (solo) but without at least one interested partner, reading and basic movements are all I can accomplish, plus there is always the uncertainty of my own interpretation. So, I am looking for anyone interested in partnering for regular study and practice in the South Sound area of Washington State (Tacoma, Olympia, Puyallup, etc.). Seattle is a bit far for me, but something I could do perhaps once or twice a month, depending. I actually live in Parkland which is in the south end of Tacoma.

Cheers!

Hi Stewart,

Thanks for the info. Yes, I did try and ask John Clements already, but he is also unaware of any in this area. Seems that either folks here are unable to communicate or are satisfied with SCA. Or perhaps have tried unsuccessfully before and given up. Maybe I'll just keep pretending to myself that I know what I'm doing with the use of my very vivid imagination.

Actually, if all else fails, I'll just slow down on learning or practicing WMA for now and go to a local school where they teach Gumdo. Better that than nothing at all, eh?

Cheers,

Ken

Did the Oregon members we have contact you yet, Ken?
Do NOT send me private messages via Forum messenger. I NEVER read them. To contact me please use direct email instead.

Ken,

Sorry, I don't know of anyone in the South Sound area. I'm located in the Seattle area (Bellevue) and have been training with another member located in Monroe. Its possible we could get down to your area on a couple times a month.

Hi John,

No, none of the Oregon members have contacted me yet. But that's okay, I didn't expect them to anyway as they are a bit far and the logistics are a concern. As an example, Portland is about a three hour drive from me (one way) plus it's couple of hours longer to Eugene and concider it a day trip to Roseburg in the south. I figure that at some point it would be great to hook up with some of them in the future as the time spent is out of the ordinary for a family man like myself for anything regular. Getting together with them will most likely have to center around seminars and such when the available time and money coincide.

In the mean time, I think I'm either going to have to make a lot of trips to Seattle (only an hour and a half drive) once in a while and create something out of nothing within my own area. Every one knows there are many folks out there, in most communities, who have always had a desire to do just what we are doing, but don't know how to find out about it or know where to look. If I dig deep enough, I know I can find those individuals and give them an opportunity to get involved. Opening my doors a little and getting the word out is the key; like putting out fliers or ads in the paper. That also means I'll have to devise a way to filter out the kooks and properly inform the misinformed. I will most likely take an example from my old Sensei when I was studying Kung Fu. His own method was slow, but the results were very satisfying. It may take me a while, but a mark of success (something you yourself can measure this by) is when I apply to become a full member of your organization. It's only a matter of time and properly focused effort.

I want to thank you again though, for a few things. For setting up this site and organization, for helping out as best you can, and for giving me my start on this road when I bought your book "Medieval Swordsmanship" back in mid 2000. Many of the sections are of great use to me.

Cheers!

Hi David,

Yes, that would be great. At this point though, I'm not sure when or how often that would be, what with so many commitments and such to juggle. But not to worry. We'll get in touch and figure something out, perhaps when the weather clears and is more reliable for making plans. Maybe even a midway point at a park somewhere would work.

You can email me at krdietiker@earthlink.net if you'd like to discuss this some more. I look forward to meeting with you someday no matter what. And thanks for responding.

Cheers!

Hi Ken,

My name is Derek, I'm the other guy from Monroe that Dave mentioned. Just thought I'd introduce myself.

Hi Derek,

Nice to meet you. As you've probably already heard (or read) we share similar interests, though not convenient local. However, I think we could still get something together now and then. I'll get in touch with you off-line.

BTW, excuse my ignorance of the German, but what is a "Kampfringen"?

Cheers!

Kampfringen is a term that means "combat wrestling." Its basically the empty hand part of HEMA.

Dave and I try to do a fair amount of it when we meet. Fun stuff
