How to avoid being kicked while sword taking?

Postby Mike_McGurk » Sat Oct 29, 2005 12:15 pm

Unlike some opponents I've faced, my current sparring partner doesn't focus on the sword in hand when I grab his weapon, but instead makes a brilliant move and kicks me. The problem is what's brilliant for him often ends in black and blue for me. On average he succeeds about 25% of the time, but because his calf muscles are about the size of tennis balls (seriously) this is something I would like to eliminate entirely. Any advice?

Immediately close to grapple and throw. If you stay at range a kicker WILL kick you.Trust me on this...I taught TKD for years under my Master <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

Shane is exactly correct. Instead of grabbing the arm, make certain you are close into the body (as in hugging the person) so you can immediately move to throw/takedown.

Grabbing the arm of the person or, the weapon, will set you up for a kick.

Mike Cartier had a brief discussion of the three ranges of MMA which went into this more.

Hey Gent's

I would say becareful whenever your at arm's length whether grabbing anything or just winding, It is the perfect stomp kick range.

I like to think in term's of Zufecten, krieg and abzug instead of the MMA/BJJ range's same thing just keep's me in the fencing mindset.
