Waster Opinions -- Purpleheart Armoury

Postby Ben Crowell » Mon Mar 27, 2006 6:49 pm

Anyone know anything about Purpleheart Armoury, and more especially, their great-sword waster here:

http://[disallowed link]/WMA/great.htm

Thanks for the opinion / feedback.

Hi Ben,

Due to service problems in the past, ARMA reccomends purchasing your wasters from someone else. I would highly reccomend New Sterling Arms or secondly Hollow Earth Works. You can find their url's here http://www.thearma.org/links.htm

Plus I also make long sword wasters if you want to private message me for details.

We don’t use them, don’t recommend them, and we warn others of this dishonest company’s past deceit, unethical business practices, and inferior wasters that are not honestly “hand made.” We refuse to deal with such unscrupulous cheats. The marketplace now offers such variety and quality of better wasters with New Stirling Arms, Raven Amouries, Hollowearth, and others, that you need't either.

p.s.
Oh, and be sure to look for the obligatory innocent polite email to come from these trash or (one of their distributors) following your posting on here.
Do NOT send me private messages via Forum messenger. I NEVER read them. To contact me please use direct email instead.

Ok, thanks guys. What about their padded training swords?

http://[disallowed link]/WMA/padded.htm

It looks about the right length, and I haven't seen another vendor offering them. Is there another supplier I may be able to go with?

I haven't put in any order from these guys yet, so I'm glad I came by here first.

I did talk to the folks at Hollow Earth last week, and they said they were busy in the shop and would call me back later that afternoon, or email me later that day. So far no phone call and no emails and it's been several days at this point. Their wasters looked good, but I was a bit discouraged thusfar with their response - perhaps they were just awfully busy. I'll give Hollow Earth another call tomorrow as I really liked their bastard sword photos.

As John said, there is <u>nothing</u> we use from that company.

Do a search on this forum and you will find information for making high quality padded swords.

Roger that. I'll browse around and see what I can come up with.

I knew someone who owned and took nice care of one of those PHAs that warped about 1.5 inches flatwise from straight -- yikes!

I had similar poor customer service experiences with Hollow Earth before. I went with New Stirling Arms and am very glad I did.

IMO, Hollow Earth does make pretty good quality wasters. Very durable and well-built, if just a little too heavy.

Their customer service on the other hand. . . As I understand it, if you can find one of their booths at a Ren Faire or somewhere then there obviously won't be a problem. I have ordered two wasters from them via e-mail and snail mail. They've never responded to my e-mails, and it took months and months for me to receive my orders. Your mileage may vary, so good luck.

Again, I do think Hollow Eath products are good quality and I would have no problem buying from them again, if I could get in touch with them personally.

My opinion is the same as David's. I have always picked up my wasters from them directly, thus I have not experienced the service problems that others have. The longswords are a little too heavy. The pomels are also a little too large. On the other hand, I think Hollow Earth does by far make the best Cut &amp; Thrust wasters.

I ended up going with New Stirling for one of their Claymores.

I think that one most closely matches the German Longswords of Johannes Liechtenaur and the translated books by Tobler.

I looked at their long hand and a half also, but opted for their claymore for a little more grip room.

I have seen that exact same thing here locally in one waster.

Yeah, I guess looks can be deceiving;
The purpleheart ones look good, but apparently the opposite is true.
And the Hollow Earth ones look like they would have weak spots, (the changes in the grain color) but apparently the opposite is true again.

In all fairness, I've never seen a broken purpleheart waster.
