CGM 558 transcription

Postby D. de Grenier » Tue Jun 22, 2004 6:49 am

Hello,

the CGM 558 transcription is available at www.hemac.org , in section "Research" > "Translations and transcriptions".

The CGM 558 fechtbuch is a XVth century manuscript, probably of swiss origin, written in Middle High German. It deals with longsword, wrestling and several other weapons.

i had a go at some german document from the member's section. while i'm pretty sure i could do a good job if it was typed, this was handwritten. the letters were REALLY difficult to make out. i've had 9 years of german, and some small experience with mittelhochdeutsch. but sorry, that weird handwriting makes it too difficult for idle effort

Yeah, but Ryan, there is a typed transcription when you download the document, is there not?

I can eeke out the calligraphy slowly. It'd be easier if I knew the language.

There is a transcription that somebody made. I only scanned it quickly, so I can't comment on it.

i'll have a look at this tomorrow. one thing that seems to help is to read the words outloud, even if you dont' recognize the spelling, the sound of the word will generally clue you in

the first little abschnitt says something like this:

you want to learn courtly and (something) fighting with the longsword so that without gauntlet and without the harness you will protect hand and body with all hand weapons, for sword, for spear, for halbard, for long messer, and also for other weapons.

read the words outloud

Excellent point. I learned this trick a long time ago, trying to eek out late Roman (Byzantine) Greek.

People stare at you when you do it in public, but maybe it's just that they stare at me funny anyhow. <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

i think this might have to wait until i get back to atlanta, when i'll have all my german resources.

right now when i get home from working like 8.5 hr days, i really can't concentrate enough. such is the life of an intern.

although i should make a print out and work on it en route to tulsa
