Training DVD / Video? ? ?

Postby Brian Dailey » Sat May 28, 2005 7:49 pm

This question begs to be asked; who has made or is making a training DVD / Video that shows step by step form, guards, etc. from multiple angles???? I know there is much available here on the website in the form of video clips, and they’re great, but the problem is I can’t watch them and try to keep up, since I don’t have an area large enough to practice where my computer is. I’ve used similar type training video for martial arts practice, and figured somebody out there has already made something that conforms to the ARMA standards. I don’t care if it’s something “professionally done”, or just guys demonstrating proper technique in a backyard. I’m just looking for something I can follow as someone new to European Martial Arts, and since I don’t have anyone to instruct me, I would like to at least see how it is performed, and try to minimize my errors. Any suggestions, as I would love to get my hands on a copy?

There are video clips available on the ARMA members site that demostrate cutting drills and the like. Membership has it's advantages. <img src="/forum/images/icons/cool.gif" alt="" />

This is the Inofficial homepage of ARMA Stockholm, Sweden, a.k.a. Blod, Svett och Dårar (Blood, Sweat and Madmen.) They have made a great job for beginners and this could realy help you get started. The English translation is on the right...

wellcome by the way...

I agree with the statement “membership has its advantages”, and have read that there is additional information / access, available to members, but my application that was sent in seems to have gone into some type of LIMBO. I see that my check hasn’t been cashed and the letter wasn’t returned, so I suspect there is someone out there with a letter in their P.O. Box saying “What’s ARMA?” Figured I would give it another week and then follow up further. All I can say is “I’m trying to become a member”.

John wears many hats, including ARMA admin. Sometimes the administrative side takes a back seat to our actual purpose which is research and teaching. That is as it should be IMO. I would advise you to...forget about the application for a while. You don't need a piece of paper to train and develop your skills and there is plenty on the main public page and in print to keep anyone occupied for a while. Just keep up with your training, sparring and conditioning and in due course the paperwork will catch up. The reason we are all here is to develop our skills and raise a dormant art from its essential saltes (if you will excuse a HPL term <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" /> ) more than just to have a shirt and paper. If you have any questions about training, there are plenty of folks here and material on line or in print linked from this page to work through. I suggest taking Ringeck, Meyer, Vadi, Danzig or any of the other manuals and get to work with it. I assure you, your membership will arrive long before you master the material! I am 3 years into this and still have more questions than answers. <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

If ye have any specific technique questions, just ask the folks here. Do you have any training partners yet?

WHOA! Sorry folks if the statement I made above came across like whining or inpatients; this was ABSOLUTELY NOT MY INTENTION, and the “LIMBO” comment was meant to be taken as concern over POSTAL HANDELING, and NOT processing by ARMA. I have the highest respect for Mr. Clements and other contributors, as their workload and dedication is clearly demonstrated by the work put into the website alone. I was attempting to reply to a post, which directed me to the MEMBERSHIP SECTION of the website, to obtain training video clips and the like, and the author made the statement “membership has its privileges”. My reply was to simply acknowledge, that it was indeed my desire to become a member, and very willing to pay the more than fair membership dues to gain access to this area of the web site. My apologies to anyone who may have taken offence, as I greatly appreciate your input and guidance.

We started our first commercial video back in 2003 but eventually put it on hold when our videographer and editor proved unreliable. Other video material was instead placed in our Member’s area. It's was then decided to delay it until this year as a result of availability of new DVD technologies and something very special which we had hoped to make an announcement on back in January but will now, I can safely say, be made in early June. So, stay tuned.

Technically I have been on sabbatical since march and will continue to be throughout the summer.

As to membership applications, the ARMA gets a lot of applications, admits only a few new members per month, and we are somewhat selective. Plus, it can take 8-10 weeks for us to review, evaluate, consult, approve, and process new memberships as well payments to clear.

The scholarly Jeffrey Forgeng and his Higgins Armory group have a nice DVD of mostly specifically Meyer-1570 stuff, with lots of imagery, definitions and stuff.
