A couple interesting sparring videos

Postby Lance Chan » Sun Jan 05, 2003 2:48 pm

I'm not sure if it is suitable to share the following videos here. If it isn't, please kindly inform me and I will remove them and refrain from posting any more of this kind of sparring videos.

Recently, we have a taiji chuan practicing friend, Dominic, returning from Australia for vacation. He has visited our sparring activity 2 years ago and he was a drone back then, being freaked out in his first weaponry sparring. This time, he appeared prepared. We seldom have people who is capable in defeating European swords with Chinese jian and he is one of the very few.

The following is a video where he fought my friend Ben, who wield a sword modelled after A&A GBS. Pay attention on how many hand cuts Ben has received just as he struck during the fight.

Today, he tried his best to visit us again before he left Hong Kong and I took the chance to fight him with my sparring sword, which is modelled after a tinker light hand and a halfer. The first round was missing from the video due to the camera not ready yet. I gave him a hand cut. The following video shows everything starting from round 2 to the end. There were many close calls he made upon me, such as a cut at my hand that was luckily deflected by my pommel, and the last thrust that just missed by an inch. There were also some hits not easy to see on the camera due to the angle problem, such as one forearm cut I gave him when I started the deceivingly casual cutting and a thrust to his solar polis (sp?) when his back was facing the camera.
