Suggestion: Reckon what percentage of body-mass the 12-year old in question is compared to average adult man (what, like 5' 8" and 170 pounds), and then scale your equipment in dimension and weight accordingly.
Or just simply utilise for training gear a safety buckler of plastic or leather, and a short-sword sized waster -- at least for now. You can find such training weaponry online, and/or can get plans for such. If a youth makes the stuff himself, make sure to follow workshop safety rules and have adult supervision.
Remember, safety first, even when doing solo stuff, and train with a knowledgeable and trusted adult overseeing the drills and any sparring between the youths, at least for starters. But hold off from the sparring until you and competent adult agree you and other youths are ready. Street-hockey "armour" is probably a smart idea to wear when any contact is expected.
