Is this a good waster to practice with?

Seems okay to me, though the grip might be a little narrow. More important than what I think is what you think. Does this waster feel right to you? As long as it can be used like a longsword, and it's comfortable to you, then it's fine. A lot of our members make their own wasters.

I think it looks good, but I would take these sharp corners:



and round them off. You wind up hitting your opponent with the cross more than you would think, and I think those edges might hurt.

I fully agree with David. It is highly likely that in your beginning training you will hit yourself in the head a few times with the guards.

Yeah, that's not bad. Just make sure all the corners and edges are as smooth, rounded, and splinter free as you can make them. Oil it up with boiled linseed oil and you're good to go.
