Chicago ARMAteers

Postby Jake_Norwood » Thu Feb 27, 2003 12:12 pm

Well, while I was hoping for a move to Houston this fall, it looks like there's a 90% chance I'm moving to Chicago instead. That means that I'll have to start up a new study group. So...is anyone on this forum from the Chicagoland area? I know that CSG is out there, but I'm really interested in continuing with the ARMA method and in bringing others into it (that doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to cross train with anybody, though).

Jake,

I'm about six hours north of Chicago...so there isn't a chance that I'll be able to train with you often. Maybe just once a year, but heck, it'll be great haveing an ARMA study group within sensible driving distance. I wish you good luck in rounding up a group!

Hey Jake, where in Chicagoland are you going to be?
All of the main training for the CSG goes on in downtown Chicago, but we also run off-site classes of our basic 12 week longsword course at various community colleges North, West and South of Chicago.

And hey, if you don't like the CSG, there is the Gallowglass Academy as well. They consist of mostly SCA folks, but they try to incorporate as must historical stuff into their training as possible. I believe right now their focus is on Sweatnam's rapier. They are also co-sponsoring Pete Kautz to come out here to teach some bowie and german dagger. Check out their website at:
gallowglassacademy.org

Hope this helps!

Hey Keith, thanks for the invite. I'm happy to train with anybody, though I'm a true-blue (red?) Armateer. The move is still months off, so we don't have a specific location, but Evanston is looking pretty likely.

My basic agenda is to set up an ARMA group down there, but keep good contact with CSG and anybody else that wants it. I'm a really moderate guy, politically speaking, but I also have my loyalties. I assume there's room for all of us down there, and hopefully we can all become good friends out of it.

Hello,
My new membership is forthcoming. If you come to Chicago area I WILL TRAIN w/ your new group. After living in Chicago for 9 years I recently took a job transfer and moved across the border to WI. I'm a 1H 45 M drive to downtown (I know this because I've driven in for sport fencing). I'm currently doing research while recovering from an orthoscopic surgery. I'm reading Anglo's "M.A.of Ren Eur.." right now [w/ freq. refs to dictionary],have read Talhoffer's 1467 "M..Combat", Clement's "Ren...Sword" - [will read his "Med...Sword" next]and 1971 reprint of Angelo's "Sch. of Fenc..." w/son Henry's 'Broadsword & Cutlass' addendums. If I dont get green light from DR. soon will either read "Codex Wallerstein" next or wait for Bob Charron's trnsl. of Getty version of Fiore. 'Till seeing your post I hadn't planned on having an opportunity to train w/ other ARMA folk till '04 when I'll be near DFW group visiting relations. If you come this way your def. WELCOME, let me know if you do & if you need any info ahead of time to ease your landing.

Jake- I have an an Uncle who lives in Evenston. That is about a 20 minute drive from where I live. So if you ever wanted to get together and train, just let me know. Also, if you wanted to stop by at one of the CSG Saturday practices, you are only 15 minutes away.

Hey Chris, where in Wisconsin do you live? I am pretty close to the Wisconsin border. Also, there is an intro to Longsword class held at the College of Lake County about 10 minutes away from the WI/IL border.

Look forward to training with you guys!
