a this is all great stuff. thanks all of you. does anyone have any information the role of pike formations in the 1500's?

Nothing on the formations really but the methods of using a pike are well described in Meyer's manual in his polearms section which also covers staff/spear and Halberd.

See Machiavelli's "The Art of War," not to be confused with Sun Tzu's book with the same name. That will probably be one of the best sources for you (though the time is a little off), and best yet, it's a primary source.
