Hi Leona,
I learned to shoot a bow at his age. I was given a 20 lb fiberglass long bow and some target arrows. My father took a lot of time showing me how to correctly shoot at an appropriate target and I was only allowed to shoot under adult supervision. I still target shoot to this day. When my son is old enough and responsible enough I will teach him the same way.
As for the sword, I would build him a padded longsword of the proper length for his size (crossguard at about the height of his belly button) and then teach him footwork, basic guards, and basic cuts. Then wait and see if he sticks with practice of the basics or if he loses interest before going any further.
hope this helps.
