Dear users of the ARMA forums:
Welcome to 2007. As is necessary every now and then, it is my job as a forum moderator to remind users of our forums of our rules and expectations. So, without further introduction, here we go:
1. ARMA is an organization that is dedicated to the world of European historical swordsmanship and, to a lesser extent, Western martial arts in general. This should be blindingly obvious to anyone who has spent more than 30 seconds on this website. As such, we are not here to promote Asian martial arts, African martial arts, Native American martial arts, FMA, etc. The ONLY exception is for the limited purpose of cross-cultural comparison of techniques or questions about shared histories. Their are plenty of other websites and forums that cater to these other martial arts and are happy to have posts which pump up these other martial arts.
2. We have seen, unfortunately, individuals frequenting this website who have some chip on their shoulder regarding some aspect of history they do not like. We are not here to serve as a sounding board for complaints about the European conquests of the New World and Africa. Go somewhere else to vent these frustrations. There exists periods of history that individuals may not like. I don't particularly like the fact that the Mongols destroyed Russia in the 12th and 13th centuries, but there is little I can do about it and I am certainly not going to make claims that the Russians were never "really defeated." They got their asses kicked and a great civilization was destroyed. But, the people survived. Slava Rossii!
3. Use your first and last name when posting. I cannot speak for other Forum moderators, but I am tired of having to repeat this basic instruction which should be blindingly obvious to anyone posting and in the future I will simply delete the posts of individuals who have not posted with their first and last names. Such indivduals are welcome to re-post with their real first and last names once they figure it out.
4. We (ARMA) maintain this website at our own expense. We are happy to do so because one of the primary reasons for ARMA's existence is to educate the public on the rich martial history of Europe. It goes without saying, however, that we are also here to promote ARMA, which we (modestly) believe to be the finest organization in the world dedicated to the revival of historical fencing. As such, we use the ARMA website to promote ARMA events. If someone wishes to make an announcement concerning a non-ARMA event, he should contact a forum moderator first to get permission. Failure to secure such permission in advance will result in deleted posts and blocked users. Also, there is no guarantee that permission will be granted. Once again, this is ARMA's website which we created and maintain at our own expense.
5. If someone on these forums asks you to back up your story with historical facts and primary historical sources, don't get offended. We ask the same of ourselves. If you do get offended when someone asks you to back up your story with primary historical sources (and historical novels and revisionist histories are NOT primary sources), you probably are on the wrong website.
Welcome to the ARMA website. There is a wealth of information here for the interested user. If you have any questions, post it on the forums or ask a forum moderator.
