Duelling shields

Postby Sal Bertucci » Fri Feb 26, 2010 8:30 am

Does anyone know how to build one?

I mean it's essentially a piece of plywoodand a closet rod, but what about the angle on the inset?

Any ideas?

I know a guy in SC who could probably build these but, I haven't been in contact with him yet (so many things to do!).

In the meantime, you will observe that the hand grip configuration differs between shields in Talhoffer and Codex Wallerstein for example. Talhoffer's shields employ straight grips running the length of the shield while, those in 'Wallerstein' are more of an "I" shape.

If you can find it (I think it is available online), Mike Loades did a five part series a few years back entitled 'The Weapons that made Britain'. In the episode which focuses on shields, he plays with a pair of these duelling shields he says were made for him (or for the film series project). While this is not advice on how to build one, it might give you some further ideas. I hope this helps and, good luck!
