Research question - Woodcraft and outdoors survival

Postby Jim Charles » Sat Jul 23, 2011 9:57 am

Hey guys,
I hope this in not too off topic.
Does anybody know of a good medieval or renaissance source about woodcraft and survival lore in those days?
It's interesting that we have mediaval and later Fechtbooks (sword manuals), various Grimoires and treatises on everything from magic to angels, and even crude and fanciful medical manuals.
But I was wondering if there is any available source for woodslore.
There might not be. As one modern wag put it, hundreds of years ago EVERYBODY had basic woods survival skills. It may have been that nobody felt there was a need to write such stuff down.
If that is true, I was wondering if there are any scholarly or entertaining non-fiction books about woodslore in the medieval to reniasiance period. Akin to the "Life in a Medieval City" or "Medieval Warfare" sorts of books.
Any help or pointers in this area are definitely appreciated.

Hunting manuals, perhaps? I recall reading something about King Modus or somebody like that.
