taking out the leg's in combat

Postby JeffGentry » Sun Apr 25, 2004 9:55 am

Hello all wanted to comment on the article about leg wound's, today i was doing a little wood work and like a dummy was cutting a dowel on a piece of wood across my leg's well need less to say it slipped and i got stabbed in the thigh, it wasn't bad 4 stiche's, but it split right open and it made me think that in real combat with a sword if you get one good shot in at the thigh it would be a pretty viscious wound and more than likely the fight would be over even if your adrenalin was flowing you would know that you were seriously hurt and the bloodloss would probably be signifigant enough that you would bleed out pretty quick, considering how much we use our leg's to move around in a sword fight the blood flowing into a muscle that large would probably be considerable. So let us not forget to protect our leg's, and take advatage of every oppertunity.

I think that a puncture to the leg is "generally" much less disabling in the short term(read "right now") than a cut.As you suggest, the legs are a very important target area, especially in sword and shield work. Both the manner of attacking and defending them should not be neglected.

I'm glad you're okay. Don't do it again <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/icons/shocked.gif" alt="" /> .

yeah i know all about that. the huge bruise on my right knee will verify this. hits to the knee generally hurt pretty bad. this one hit some nerves, so it took me a minute or so to recover

(regarding thrusts)
It really depends on just where in the leg it hits, and the blade form that hit it. Remember JC's old leg wound? A thrust in the muscle, against the grain of the muscle, from a cutting blade could immediately cripple, but a spadone in the same spot may just pass through. A good thrust to the bone may break or split it, likewise the artery. A good thrust from any blade to anywhere in the knee would be bad news. Thankfully most of our legs consist mostly of muscle, so that's the likliest place to get hit.
