Just a thought that I would like to share with all of you:
Last Monday, I was on a camping trip with my youngest brother and one of our friends. As we were goofing around, my brother happened to be playing around with his camping knife. I'm sure by now you've at least made a guess about where this is going. Now, being the brother of an ARMA member, he was accustomed to handling some weapons, and there was no way he would have actually cut me if I had remained still. But I saw the cut coming, and in turn I instinctively put my hand up to catch his hand. However, the attempt to catch his knife hand was only half-hearted, as we were both just playing around. So my hand fell rather short of its mark, and I now have four stitches in my right ring finger.
This just goes to prove that if we're committed to learning true Renaissance Martial Arts, we need to train until proper technique becomes as natural as breathing. When and if we reach that point, the next time our younger brothers decide to play with knives around us, our sense of range will override our defensive instinct, and we'll just let the knife pass us by!
