Insights from Historical Artwork

A close up of the Valois tapestry of 1565.  Note the youth armed with a simple close-hilt sword of wide blade. Worn with armor and no sheath this weapon is not a rapier but a military sword.  In the background knights tilt on foot with spear at the barriers.
