1st person aspect sparring video

Postby Lance Chan » Sun Jan 09, 2005 12:42 pm

During the last sparring day I mounted a wireless cam that I bought for recording my RC car driving as the driver himself inside the cage of my ice hockey helmet. We took video of my sparring in first person aspect for a try and it was fun! My cam was a very cheap one so the signal wasn't always clear but anyway, here's the highlight of it.

We were wondering while watching the clips - how closely aligned is the camera's field of view with the point you're looking at?

We've always been taught in various disciplines to watch the
opponent's eyes, not limbs or weapons; you seem to be watching the weapon. Is this an accident (camera not pointed where you are looking), or is that how you were taught?

I'm not trying to claim one way or another is best, but I'm curious about different attitudes on where to look.

The rationale & method I was taught: Weapon and limb motions are more fully deceptive than eyes; and also to try to "see" the whole opponent without looking away from the eyes.

The camera is placed in front of my mouth and is pointed slightly downward to show the whole person during action. My eyes don't look the same way as the camera. I don't focus on any particular part of my opponent but have a much broader view. The cam only show 60 degree of the view span, so it's quite different from what my eyes actually see. :P

They let me use it way beyond the evaluation date.... so.... I didn't pay. :P It's kinda free, they just remind you how many files and sessions you've been using it so far to delay the operation a bit.
