Good for you! A pell is a great training tool.
I would also work in shadowfighting and combinations.
As for bad habits, it's definitely important to get feedback from a knowledgeable and experienced person/group, otherwise you may even be developing bad habits before you're tired! That's one of the many benefits of becoming an ARMA member (members can post vids of themselves on the member e-list for feedback, and meet with other study groups to work closely on stuff).
I have heard that a lot of physical trainers say to do an exercise until you're unable to utilize proper technique, so that is an interesting point about stopping before you get sloppy. You do need to push yourself physically in some way, though, or you won't improve your fitness much.
