Pell question

Postby shane wink » Wed Apr 13, 2011 5:35 pm

As a beginner how often do you use a pell? I work on mine once a week even though the disrespect is there for more than that my endurance is not and I worry about developing bad habits trying to use it when tired.

I work just footwork and guard transition mostly now, any other advice to add in ?

Good for you! A pell is a great training tool.

I would also work in shadowfighting and combinations.

As for bad habits, it's definitely important to get feedback from a knowledgeable and experienced person/group, otherwise you may even be developing bad habits before you're tired! That's one of the many benefits of becoming an ARMA member (members can post vids of themselves on the member e-list for feedback, and meet with other study groups to work closely on stuff).

I have heard that a lot of physical trainers say to do an exercise until you're unable to utilize proper technique, so that is an interesting point about stopping before you get sloppy. You do need to push yourself physically in some way, though, or you won't improve your fitness much.

I have applied for membership a few weeks ago but for now there is not anyone else practicing near me. Dallas Fort Worth is 3hrs away and when accepted I plan on contacting them for a visit.

I just got Clements's Medieval swordsmanship and have been reading it in my down time. I know its not a how to manual exactly but I have considered working some of the cuts into the training, however I have been waiting to be approved for membership and use the training progression that is there.

My fitness is solid, I weight train and do HITT cardio 3days a week plus my job is requires fitness( fire fighter)

Thanks for the response I will look into the shadow fighting.

Good luck on your pending membership! In the meantime, to help answer your queries about the pell, you might want to read the excellent article here: http://www.thearma.org/essays/pell/pellhistory.htm

Vegitius also offers some advice on training at the post (pell).
