Test Cutting Session

Postby Matthew_Anderson » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:17 am

We had a a really good test cutting session yesterday hosted by Bob Savage at his home on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. We started with some easy stuff to warm up, cutting the infamous "pool noodles." Actually, they can be tough to cut cleanly if you don't have good form and get the blade moving fast:

Then we cut some water-filled bottles. As usual, nobody had any trouble with those.

Then we cut some rolled up, soaked grass mats. Everyone was able to cut them quite easily, I think maybe that's what they use them for Tamishagiri, it's really easy to make a really impressive cut on these.

Then we cut some cardboard "carpet tubes." These are pretty challeging. The walls were about 1/4" thick and a sloppy cut will be stopped or deflected somewhat.

It was a great day and we learned a lot as usual.

Looks like you guys had lots of fun. In Provo yesterday we met in Stewart's back yard, and went on a mad pumpkin slaughter. We sliced up enough pumpkins to fill one city trash container to overflowing.

Lots of fun.

Must be something in the air. We recently had a pumkin massacre as well..... In my back yard last week I also did a test smashing of pumpkins with a staff (thanks Stacy!). The thrusts went through one outer wall (but not the other) and knocked it off the stand. The big overhand whistling smashes broke them into bits.

Tatami is the Asian pool noodle in my opinion We cut up to triple rolled matts with no dificulty whatsoever. This has served to remind me just how limited a target rolled grass matts really are...sure are fun though
