Columbus Museum of art

Postby JeffGentry » Sat Oct 29, 2005 7:05 pm

Hey Folk's

Well the Columbus museum of art has a few piece's of Armour from The Higgin's museum, around 50, on display and i went to have me a little look see, good stuff, it alway's fascinate's me how ingenious they were in articulating armour, they had beautiful mail shirt on display very small ring's looked as if it was made to go under the clothing as a hidden layer of protection, it was finely wrought.

My father went with me and in the course of telling him a few thing's other's had question's of weight and how they were able fight in plate armour, was a good day for dispeling some myth's.

Now i just need to drag my butt to the Frasier to see there collection from Leed's.

Jeff

Speaking of mace's they had a very nice mace head on dislay it was around 18 inch's and had to be a attached to a seperate handle, with the right length handle looked as thoug it would do a good bit of damage.

Hey Shane

I hear the Frazier museum in Kentucky is ARMA friendly, and from what i heart they have a pretty good dispaly from The Royal armouries and are bringing in and sending stuff back and forth with them i just need to drag myself down there to check it out.

Heck it is only a couple of hour's away from me.

Finally saw the exhibit today. Beautiful stuff. Looking at it up close and visualizing how to hit someone wearing it really makes you think a lot more about 1/2 swording that I normally do.

I cannot resist anymore- I also saw an awesome exhibit this past weekend in Chicago- The Wife and I took a weekend trip to Chicago and visited the Chicago Muesum of Art-home of the George F. Harding collection- just an awesome display.

They had everything from Staff weapons of every kind to maces etc---the armor was incredible six full suits which were all matching, and various other pieces.

What caught my attention was the skill and delicacy of the engraving and etching done to every surface of some of the suits- wow!

I've never been to the Columbus museum, but I hope to go some day.

I have been to Chicago, though. Not as many swords on display as I was hoping, but I thought the armor displays were great. They also had a mail shirt like Jeff described that appears as though it may have been for civilian defense (against rapiers and daggers maybe) than military use.

Aaron, did you see that Dopplehaender they had tucked in the corner? That sucker was big, wasn't it?

Hey David

This is a special exhibit, it is only here until Jan 1 i think, this is mainly armour they had one sword and one halbred and a rondel, a spear point and mace head that was the extent of the weapon's.

David---Ahh yes I sure did see that sword and guess what, it was around 14lbs I think- My Wife asked me right away if that was how heavy they actually were- but then there it was right on the plaque next to the sword- "parade sword 15 Century" It was just for special show purposes- cool hugh?-
