Doing flourysh

Postby Alfred Wong » Thu Apr 07, 2005 12:30 am

When I was practising today I got the idea of having some flourysh, so I recorded it, all three:

http://lancelot.servehttp.com/P1020775.MOV
http://lancelot.servehttp.com/P1020776.MOV
http://lancelot.servehttp.com/P1020777.MOV

The Longsword is a RSW-sword, weighting 4 pounds but with ~2 inches PoB, modelled after the Svante sword of Albion. Files are 26.5 mb in total, QuickTime format.

I would like to ask, what is the use and tips for flouryshing? I tried to imitate the video I found in the video section, but seems that I need more advice doing it......

Besr regards,

Nicely done, Alfred! As you get more comfortable with combining a series of techniques into a flourysh, you can start increasing the "pepper" on your cuts and thrusts.Don't be afraid to vocalize as you cut...MA, both East and West have long shown the efficacy of exhaling powerfully when executing an explosive technique, in generating more power. Again, well done! Flouryshing towards a purely imaginary target is the thing I have the most trouble with, it takes me forever to smoothly execute in a flourysh a series of techniques I can attack a pell with easily.

Thanks for your kind words Mallgren!

Thanks Colin.

Yes - I shall try to vocalize it next ti,e. Actually you can see there's an elevator behind - I was practising at the patio (?) of the estate (?) that I live, if it wasn't Lance, I would not notice that there are actually AUDIANCE looking at me when they go on the elevator and get to work, it was 8:30 a.m. in the morning! LoL!

To fence with an invisible enemy, I need to think about it then...

That's pretty good really. Try varying your tempo more. Don't get locked into a rythm, but rather flourish as you would fight, flowing some movements in rapid succession, others more sporadically. Also, as you do the techniques, imagine you are actually striking and thrusting at an opponent, make each strike as if you are actually fighting with intent to do him harm. This is part of what we refer to as "emotional content" Also try changing direction, traversing, turning, etc. Fighting isn't usually along one line, but very fluid, so practice this type of footwork as you flourish. As you learn more techniques, you can incorporate them as well, including half-swording. You're on the right track, keep it up!

Thanks Matthew for the tips, so the summary is:

1. Vocalize with intent
2. Imagine fighting invisible opponent

I will try - for now, it seems to me that in sparring I only need a fit hits to finish my oppoenet (or get finished, hee hee), then in flourysh I will have to imagine that my opponent is really, really tough.

2. Imagine fighting invisible opponent

Personally I've found it easier to work in more varied footwork if I imagine multiple opponents. I imagine what the opponent would do, act, etc. When I finish ghost #1 off, I pick a direction for ghost #2, turn to engage, etc.

I don't usually spend much time on any particular opponent since most bouts don't last more than a number of seconds.

I'm still getting comfortable doing this fluidly. Practice, practice, practice. :/

Thanks James,

so 2 is corrected to : Fight the invisible opponent(s).

While they are ghosts, I think I need an exorcist when flouryshing, LoL!

Best wishes,
Alfred

Okay guys - thanks for the tips. I practised today and again, did some flourysches and recorded them:

Please send me a PM for the access, the accounts were overloaded quickly and I must deliver them privately.

37mb, win-rar format, please use winrar to extract the QuickTime files.

Here's the tiny place that I practise - This is a Sunday after noon, full of kids and parents, and I did the flourysches before them all with vocalized strikes, they did stare at me strangely... I've been moving my shooting site from places to places since my practise area is being occupied with kids with bicycle, kids with badminton bat, kids with football... you can see in the last video clip, sigh. How lucky are you out there! Green grass! Big field! Big gym room! ARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I tried to apply the tips from you guys (Thanks!), in this practise, you will notice that I tried with different style in each flourysch. Please feel free to comment about them.

Best regards,

Very nice building!

I see it's got platforms where you can pour hot lead onto the heads of attackers, and has the archer positions stacked countless stories high. Very defensible position.

I don't think it would hold up too well against rams and trebuchets.
