NTP 1.0 in Columbus OH last weekend

Postby David Kite » Sun May 01, 2005 9:23 pm

Well, technically it was held in Lancaster, OH, but it was hosted by the Columbus study group.

Anyway it was a great success. There was a turnout of about 10 people attending with a pretty even mix of ARMA members, as well as those completely new to RMA. It was great to meet the new faces as well as train with old colleagues.

As always it is a wonderful experience being able to train under an experienced instructor. As has been said by others before, every time I attend a 1.0 seminar, I learn something entirely new and find areas in my own training to refine and improve upon (like guards and footwork ). NTP 1.0 provides an excellent foundation and basis in ARMA's 3 Tier Curricula structure.

In addition to training within the larger group, ARMA members recieved personal instruction/evaluation/feedback from John Clements, which by itself was at least as beneficial and educational as the rest of the information presented over the weekend.

Unfortunately there was little time for any free-play, save during the lunch break, however everyone was treated to a wonderful meal Saturday evening by Jaron's wife (whose name eludes me, embarassingly, but it was good food).

Finally, at the close of the seminar, the rank of General Free Scholar was awarded to Francisco Uribe and myself. Congratulations to Francisco on a job well done.

Congratulations to David and Francisco. It was a wonderful event and I learned a great deal about all aspects of the art (to put it mildly). Including a very different approach to the Krumphau and Schielhau that cleared up a number of other Meyer things that had mystified me for some time in one fell stroke (ok, bad pun ) . Plus the half swording, and meeting scholars (old and new) from around the region. Thanks to John C. for sharing some of his vast knowlege.

Yes, I had agreat time. Thanks to all for the hospitality and I agree that to meet John and to have some personal attention from him was well worth the trip. The new info was very exciting including the "new" Krumphau-that one was a surprise for me but makes perfect sense. Thanks to all for the sparring time. Thanks also to Jaron and Jeff for the accomodations. I will see all of you Ohio guys soon-now, to go clean up this northerner accent I never knew I had, eh? LOL

Guys, I am EXTRAORDINARILY upset that I wasn't able to be there. Congrats to David and Francisco, and thanks to John for coming out to train with the Columbus group. I can't wait to take advantage of your teachings via Jeff, Jaron, etc.

Thanks everybody on the nice comments!

It is true that was a most exciting weekend. Boy... I wish this sort of thing would happen more often.
It was so nice to see other fellow students, and finally be able to associate faces to names. I'm extremely happy that I was able to make some friends... specially the kind that I can learn from.
This is truly a vast ocean. I haven't even got my ankles wet yet.

It was very exciting to spar, for the first time, using wasters and no helmets at all. It changed the feeling of the free play into a extremely different thing from padded swords.
I'm still absorbing the information, and I'm so glad that I was able to understand SO much more than on my first 1.0.

A special note to our new GFS David. His answers to JC's questions and skill displays were all that must be expected from a serious student of the sword. In the end, his diploma and big grin were well deserved.
It was not confortable to test after his presentation. The bar was set high.

Another note To our host Jaron. Thank you for making all this possible.

To JC, who was prodigal in friendship, attitude, knowledge and above all professormanship.

A final note to my wife. If she had not driven me there, this most excellent weekend would have come to be.
Gracias, Marcela... te amo.

Ann Arbor....
Give me time. MSU and U of M will be ARMA recruiting grounds next fall. I'm confident that we could find enough interested people.

Had a heck of a time boys. I know my friend and I are newbies, but you guys showed us so much and we both learned a lot and we didn't feel out of place at all. Thanks to Aaron for beating us young'uns into pulp! Thanks again to John C for coming all the way out. Keeping drilling and practicing!
