Stupid Question: Oil for steel..?

Hey, I have a steel and I need to put some oil on it to protect the blade from rust and whatnot. Which kinds of oil are a good idea to use?

I have had good luck with hoppes gun oil.

thanks you guys....I was told you can use wd 40 or I think I once heard pure mineral oil suggested to protect knives and swords..Is that true?

Mineral Oil works, avoid the wd-40 as it will evaporate over a short time and leave your blade unprotected. I use a light machine oil on my blades.

I've never used anything but plain 3-in-1 oil on exterior surfaces of all my guns, and I therefore use it on all my knives/swords. Never given me a problem yet.

alot of people use CLP Breakfree or a simple mineral oil. CLP can be found in the gun section of any walmart and mineral oil can be found in any pharmacy section- usually near the laxatives.

I have used motor oil for storing it overa longer period of time.. it is thick and keeps it nicely covered.

CLP or Miltec works well for me although 3in1 or WD40 do in a pinch.
