New Monthly Column

Postby Gene Tausk » Tue Jan 07, 2003 6:11 pm

Beginning this month, I am writing a monthly column for the ARMA website. With the moniker, "Renaissance Man" (catchy, eh?), I will be trying to write about issues which are related to or someway deal with (even in an offhand way) Western Martial Arts, swordsmanship and swords.

The column can be found in the "Editorial" part of the articles section of the website.

Is this a complete waste of time for me and for (any) readers? Only the Shadow knows....

Gene,

Excellent article. I look forward to reading this each month. I get the same question also "why don't you study a "real" martial art? I respond that I have my black belt but I also lived in Asia and Asians for the most part don't really care for americans or europeons, some do, most don't, wo why study thier heritage when I should be studying mine? Don't get me wrong I love the Samurai and the culture but I prefer a long sword in my hand that my ancestors carried compared to the Katana.

A good read, Gene.

I've been thinking about that quite a-bit lately myself. What would you guys think about starting a new thread, possibly in the unarmed area, devoted to nothing but assisting visiters, realize that WMA is just as real as AMA? People generally tend to accept things they are familar with. Things that they can say, "ya, I reconize that from Karate. It's almost exactly the same thing I learned at Master So-and-so's dojo."

By doing a comparison (not contrast) between simular techniques (WMA/AMA), we could keep things "western oriented." Like listing/citing techniques by: manual it appears in, date the manual was likely written, german/italian/ect. name for the technique, .... Does this sound like a worthwhile Idea? Would it be acceptable for the forum?

One of the first things that I did when I got my copy of "Medieval Combat" by Hans Talhoffer-translated by Mark Rector, was go through it, book-mark techniques that I was already familiar with, and take it to my current AMA class. I think it really opened a few eyes...even already "open" ones.

I think that it might also just be cool! With almost all of the ARMA members coming from (or currently cross training in)some form of varied AMA back ground, we could have ourselves a nice little "technique" library to draw from. Think of the "converting" we could do to the masses then!

Jared,

I did the same thing when I got my copy of Talhoffer.
I just recieved Keith Myer's book before christmas and have been going through it making notes also. If you do not have Keith's book you should check it out. It is great to see a technique you have been doing for years from an ama illustrated by several european masters!

O.K., never mind. I found Kieth's address and the price for the book else where on the Forum. Is the address and price still the same?
