Been a while. . .

Postby Eric Dougherty » Tue Jun 28, 2005 7:58 pm

Hello again everyone! It's been a long time since I've been seriously studying and attempting to practice European martial arts. It's great to see how much things have grown in the last couple years or more since I've been active on here. Anyway, I would like to finally get serious about becoming a practicioner and get connected with some others who I can train with. Right now I am in Lancaster PA, but am headed off to Colgate University in the fall. I know there are several NY study groups, but I was wondering how close the upstate group is to Hamilton, the town where the college is. So if anyone is in that area or near me here in PA and is interested in gaining a sparring partner and helping me get started again, let me know. You can e-mail me at ericdougherty@gmail.com or leave a message here. Thanks in advance!

Hey Eric,
Welcome back to RMA. We are located in Waterford, NY. I believe we are about 2 1/2 hours from Hamilton. Waterford is north of Albany. Utica is 1 1/2 hours and Hamilton looks to be another 20-30 minutes. We train Sundays at 10am. You of course, would be welcome to join us. You can email me at

Thanks for your replies. Ray, I'll see what my schedule looks like when I'm in New York. At least I know there is a group within a decent distance. I'm hoping maybe to start a club on campus if I can find other interested individuals. Derek, I'll be gone from July 22-31. In August I should be around.

Another question, I know the best way to learn a martial art is from someone else, but until I get connected with someone capable, what is the best way to go about getting started? Right now I'm pretty much a total beginner. I have some basic head knowledge, have read all the materials on the site and a few books, but putting it into practice seems to be a totally different ball game. Any suggestions?
