type of helmet during Hussite wars?

Postby Felix Kratzer » Thu Jul 07, 2005 1:09 am

Hi everyone, I'm new on this board and want to give my best regards to everyone here. Looking forward on discussing with you all!
I'd like to start with my favourite topic of the Medieval periods: the Hussite wars. Recently bought the book from the Osprey series about this topic. But I heard that these series are controversial concerning authenticy.
Can anyone give me reliable sources and information, pics etc. on what kind of helmet was worn during this time 1419-36? Some say that the hounskull bascinets were used (with bevor plate maybe), others say that these were not in use anymore since replaced by great bascinets with rounded appearance...
Looking forward to your comments!!

From what I saw recently in Prague and in South Bohemia, it looked like a lot of German / Swiss style Sallet type helmets with bevors, though this would be from statues, wax figures, modern re-enactors etc., not really hard evidence.

Love Prague a lot, was there this spring and plan to go there again in fall !! Great city! Where did you see those wax figures and statues?
I think, that the time was a bit early for the sallet (maybe some early forms without lifting visor and without bevor); as far as I know the "real" sallets came out at about 1460...

It was my understanding that they had more of the kettle helm types at this point in time at this place. Some of the early sallets maybe present. Im just going off of memory here and may be off.
