Bear hunting image

Posted for Chris Thies:

"I thought this particular image would be of interest not merely because of its over all quality of execution, but also because the detail of the various hunting tools and accessories depicted (spear shafts, dog collars, etc.) are commensurate with surviving historical specimens. And of particular interest is that the half-swording lord, approaching to deliver the coup de grâce, is clearly depicted utilizing some type of wrap to protect his bare, off-hand."

"Between 1567 and 1577, Stradanus designed the cartoons for the Hunting Scene tapestry for Cosimo's villa at Poggio a Caiano near Florence. The cartoons were so successful he did two more series, published as engravings by Antwerp printmakers."
His prints have been reproduced in some European hunting history books. I think the 'Deutsches Jagdmuseum, Münich' may have one of these original engravings of this image.

I am reminded of an account from August, 1097, Duke Godfrey of Bouillon had an encounter with a wild bear where he hurt himself attempting to kill the animal: "seizing the sword which had got entangled with his own legs in the sudden fall from his horse and the struggle with the frenzied wild beast…he aimed swiftly at the beast’s throat, but mutilated the calf and sinews of his own leg with a serious cut.” Interesting.

Does the preceding text imply half-swording? I don't see a direct link in what is provided.Thanks.

Now that I look at my post, no. I mistyped, it doesn't mention half swording just his killing the animal. Sorry for any confusion.
