Sword names

Postby Justin Blackford » Sat Sep 03, 2005 9:29 pm

I'm sure we're all familiar with the Sagas and how the Tribal Germans, Nordics, Celtics, and many other peoples named their prized weapons, but I am wondering as to how many of you out there have actually given a name to your sharpened, high-quality blades.
Personally, I haven't come up with anything yet, although I am leaning towards something cute like "Widowmaker" for my longsword. hehe..

No, but I do have the device of a Heron Volant burned onto the riocasso of my waster (I did some research, and that's my family crest). There were still several Purple Hearts at the time, so it served to distinguish mine.

I've honestly thought about it quite a lot, but haven't been able to come up with suitable names. I don't want to rip off any already existing names and I'm quite picky (to say the least). So for now my NG Duke is just.... Duke.

Well, if you read Beowulf or any of the other older sagas, you may come across names like "Bone-biter, or maille-biter...." But for a more modern approach to naming, for me it would have to be something like "Wallet-biter" or "Checkbooks' Bane" or something...

I completely agree with Rod on this one. Ive been reading up on the Sagas on the ARMA site and after buying The Clontarf from Albion, I have had a strong urge to name my sword. Again nothing comes to mind thats overly great and stands out but I'm constantly on the search.

Actually, I'm starting to think of something like "Man-Breaker" or "Orphan-Maker"(I know that sounds cruel!) or something else cool like "Hell's Courier". I've always got cute names for swords and other weapons.

Or if your spouse has a hard time understanding the financial investment in swords, "divorce maker" might be good. Or there's always "exhibit A"

We always used things that described virtues we held in high esteem, or native american style descriptive names... like wind of dawn, or bright star. As long as it means something to you. It is an extension of self after all.

I often name my particularly favorite weapons, simply to have something to refer to them with, and because I get attached to them. The names range from cryptically personal like Damiano, my first homemade waster which I still own and cherish, to humorous, as in the case of StabbityPoke and SlashyDeath, my wooden knives I am finishing now
"In a fair fight, I would have beaten you!"
"Not much incentive for me to fight 'fair' is it?"

I plan on my first sword being a two-hander. I'm leaning towards Ka-Ran(fire storm).

But that's Japanese. For a more European feel, there's the Celtic runes, uruz~thurisaz~sowulo~hagalaz. I couldn't actually draw their symbols. But they can translate as(they can refer to a good deal of things), energy, discipline, power, and destruction.

I'm not spelling a sentence with the runes, keep in mind, simply listing them as seperate runes to let their chosen meanings stand by themselves. You can actually try to spell with runes though.

Hmm, how bout, 'Bloodletter', 'Gleaming Doom', 'Flesh Cleaver', 'Limb Reaver', 'Dancing Death', 'Flashing Demise', 'Bringer of Decay', 'Worm Feeder', and 'Soul Parter'.

Less disturbing names, 'Coming Storm', 'Foe Hammer', 'Coinspinner', 'Doomgiver', 'Dragonslicer', 'Farslayer', 'Mindsword', 'Shieldbreaker', 'Stealth', 'Tyrant's Blade', 'Stonecutter', 'Soulcutter', 'Townsaver', 'Wayfinder', 'Trollsbane', 'Heartsword', 'Daemons Blood', 'Heartguard', 'Lifegiver', and 'Howling Vengence'.

Hope that helps. Can use some combination of those words or new words.
