Rehabilitation needed for two absence. (wrists)

Postby Michael J Pierce » Sun Oct 23, 2005 7:52 pm

Hiya,

It's been a while since I've been on this forum. Roughly, two and a half years ago I trained with ARMA in Provo, Ut while the group was headed by the adept Jacob Norwood. Now that circumstances and schedule permit for the practice of the ARMA method of European Martial Arts, I have run into a problem:

Using my waster, I've been working through all the drills I can remember as well as using what material on the ARMA website I may find. However, as I cut I have a pain in my wrist that I never had before. Somehow, I believe that this is somewhat common. So, the question is: What can I do to strengthen my wrist?

Thanks.

here's to many exciting and enlightening discussions in the near future.

Michael

What kind of pain? Is it of the "these muscles are sore because they are not used often" or "something is structurally damaged" sort?

Push-ups on your knuckles. Make sure you haven't strained anything.

If it's just pain caused by unused muscles protesting, my solution is "what excercise makes you better at swordfighting? swordfighting."

On the other hand, if you think you've damaged something, you might want to see a doctor.

I had some wrists pain when I started ARMA and streching my wrists before and after training really helped. The wrist is mostly ligaments, which sometimes at first aren't used to a lot of the repeated wrist motion that comes from practicing some techniques. I agree though, I'd be sure nothing is sprained.

Michael

It is good that everyone is trying to help. However, remember that while all of us have opinions none of us, with the exception of ARMA member Mathew Webb, have any medical knowledge. So, if at all possible go see your doctor. Far better to waste some money on a doctor visit then to risk further injury that might follow you for life.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I'm not sure about the sprain, but won't rule it out. I've been working for UPS as a package handler since I got home (5 months), but usually my wrist stay pretty much in the same position the whole night.

My bet is on the post that mentioned the legiments of the wrist. I've already discovered that by putting my arm (forearm to wrist) either perfectly vertial or horizontal, holding the point of my waster, and allowing my wrist to relax will stretch my wrist out pretty well. Hopefully I'll see improvment soon as I'm carful to avoid strains and regain the wrist flexibility I once had.

Thanks all for the help.

I'll be sure to ask my dad (DC) about it when he gets home from the bay area what his scholarly opinion is on the matter. <img src="/forum/images/icons/wink.gif" alt="" />

Funny, my wrist hurts mostly from pushing a mouse all day. I actually think the exercise I get from sword work may be helping delay the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome (although it seems to be slowly getting worse anyway).

It may be carpal tunnel. One thing you can do for it is this: take a newspaper sheet. Grab it with one hand in the corner and using only that hand, gather the entire sheet into your hand until it is a tight ball. Then do the next sheet with the other hand. Repeat until you go through the daily paper.

See a doctor.

I also highly recommend seeing a doctor but just wanted to add that I had a similar problem where certain waster cuts resulted in a sharp wrist pain in line with my index finger. Turned out to be a ganglion cyst, a common, harmless condition with usually simple treatments. Good luck.
