Are Study Sheets for Rapier Available for members?

Postby Rod-Thornton » Fri Nov 04, 2005 7:12 am

Do we have any study sheets available for the Rapier? Something along the lines as the study sheets (available in the members' area) for the GFS & SFS that exist for the longsword would be of an immense value in learning the rapier.

Other than that, while the path to proficiency in longsword is rather well-fleshed out, the parallel path to rapier competency seems a bit without "path-markers."

Please advise.

Hi Rob,

rapier can get complex quickly. Are you looking for a "true" rapier style, or more of a cut and thrust style? Italian, Spanish, or German? My primary area of study with the rapier is the Italian schools, there are more writings for this than the others. I would highly reccomend a copy of Fabris translated by Tom Leoni as a great Italian rapier manual. Just like longsword, start with your four guards, in Italian rapier they are actually named first, second, third, and fourth. Learn your basic foot work, learn how to properly attack and defend. There is a nice intro article at myarmoury.com on Italian rapier, there are some good articles on the rapier here. Also, you might want to look at my article on how to build yourself a fiberglass rapier simulator to get a decent inexpensive starting weapon.

hope this helps.

RoD, not RoB...

Thanks for the reply...unfortunately, it does not. While I am using Cappo Ferro as my primary study guide (liking Jared Kirby's translation), I have other manuals as well. And yes, while I am practicing thrusting with from prima, secunda, terta, and quarta into targets, and doing some basic setting aside while counter-thrusting and moving, I was hoping to find a clearly enunciated set of objectives (a.k.a., a "punch list") that could be used to prepare a student for certification in that particular weapon, much like the free scholar study sheets for the longsword. My thoughts were in the Italian tradition.

'preciate the advice, tho'.

Hey Rod

We haven't set down a GFS rapier sheet yet because most of us have been working on longsword, AFAIK they are working on it at the moment because alot of us are moving into some other weapon's now that we are getting comfortable with the longsword, hopefully it will be available soon though.

We did earlier, but they have been in editing and revision stage for like two years, it has not been a great priority becuase the info is essentially decentralized and spread among several articles and pages, sorry. They wil be online early next year though.
