So...What tradition does the "catfighting", as they call it, of FSCC follow?

Yeah, that FSCC has an interesting website. I especially like the "art" section.

..Just in case you wonder, those fotos were made on a show. We are NO re-enactment group and do not get payed if we do a show. It's all for the Martial Art, with comments and technics and stuff, so people finally can realize that it's just normal to accept WMA as a Martial Art (this is quite nicelly formulated. For I think it's a shame what we europeans do with EMA, rising it to heavens).
As for my Mother, she's called MotherBear, and not many can actually get her in free-play. Oh, that mighty roar!

You're a few months ahead of me; maybe you could let me know what sources have helped you in your training in the past few months.

As for me, I picked up John Clements's book on Medieval Swordsmanship a couple of years ago and was an occasional visitor to the ARMA website until last month, when I became a more regular visitor. These are both great places to start, but the thing I'd most strongly recommend is trying to get to an ARMA NTP 1.0. I went to the one in Appleton, Wisconsin in October 2005, and I wish I could go to a half-dozen more. There was so much information presented, and everyone else's enthusiasm is contagious. It's also inspiring to see how skilled others are and how effective the techniques are when used by more advanced students.

At this point, my beginner's study consists of trying to read the translations of the historical manuals (starting with Dobringer). Practice consists of basic fitness (running, weightlifting, Pilates), trying to get my guards and cuts straight, and occasionally doing touch/press drills with my husband. We have the New Stirling Arms wasters and think they're great. I marked my waster with painter's tape to designate my leading edge, and the weak, middle, and strong areas. Ideally, I'd love to find others to form a study group in the Twin Cities, Minnesota.

As a woman, it can feel like going against conditioning to hit others and others (especially men) may initially hesitate to hit you. I have a lot of trouble with attacking in earnest, using a non-padded weapon against an unarmored opponent, even if I've just got a waster. At the Appleton NTP 1.0, John Clements had to really encourage me to cut at him in earnest despite the fact that he could knock me over with one stroke. This is still a struggle when I cut against empty air, so I was planning on getting a pell or putting up some sandbags to strike at. Any thoughts with regard to pells?

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. When my 12 year old daughter first started, she was timid and threw out "wet spaghetti"...today however, after a few months of (ahem) conditioning with the boys from Virginia Beach, her Sheitelhau to my Alber connected just beautifully against my outstretched hands (man, a thumb screw couldn't have hurt any worse -I should'a made her waster from balsa wood and not oak...or at least made it longer so she'd hit my head and the mask rather than my mits). The morale here, you'll soon drop that trait as you train. Have fun! <img src="/forum/images/icons/grin.gif" alt="" />

I had that same problem with my wife. Some things that might help...

Have them wear some kind of padding so you are not afraid of "hurting" them.

Have them tell you horrible things, like "I am here to kill all the babies, and the puppies and kittens too!" And then imagine you have to protect them. Figure out what it takes to push your buttons and use it.

What I wound up doing to desensitize Donna, was to get her used to attacking my sword as hard as she could. She didn't mind hitting it. When I got her used to making an all out attack, I started just waiting for her to strike and then moving my sword out of the way, tricking her into hitting me instead. Then, congratulating her on making a good hit before she could apologize for hitting me.

Using these techniques she got over her fear of making contact pretty quick.

Hi Elizabeth,

have you looked at Stewart Feil's Pell article here on the website? If you want to pad your pell, a series of pool noodles duct taped to the outside of your pell works wonders.

Good luck in your training.

Hey Elizabeth

Glad to see your and hubby are still at it, we did enjoy having you at the 1.0, Just keep at it and try to strike with intent when ever you see your not just stop and try to go with intent.

I think a pell is a great training tool that was why they were made.

"I'm not a femiNazi, hahah, just curious."

'Real men' in no way feel threatened by women who choose to dabble in what are (for lack of a better term) traditionally male pursuits; the surest mark of an utter wimp is a compulsion to sneer at any and all women who do. (So, just what are you uh, 'compensating' for there bro?...)

It is gratifying (yet entirely unsurprising) to see that this is in no way true of the men who post here.

Thanks for the suggestion, Brian. Do others here prefer the standing or hanging pell?
