sword care kit

Postby Douglas L. Meek » Sat Dec 31, 2005 11:28 am

what do you guys have for a sword care kit? i keep a box, with various oil rags, and cleaning rags in it. also a whet stone for the sharp blades and some 3-in-1 oil. I now hear that a light mineral oil is better for the blade then 3-in-1 oil.

also i keep a allen wrench for my atrim, when i need to take it apart to clean.

what do you guys keep in your kit?

also whats the best way to take off rust? i got a knife its pretty old too and coverd in rust. my grandfather gave it to me but he never took very good care of it.

I have much the same as you along with a few files and such and some Hoppes 9 solvent for cleaning it up pretty well after testcutting and stuff. But the best thing I've gotten so far is the grey scotchbrite pad recommended by on Albion's site to take care of their blades. Good lord it works wonders. I love it and it helps so much with blade cleanup. My blades now look prestine instead of scuffed up and such.

Other than that I dont know what else to have.

I had a helluva time actually finding the pad - i went to 4 home depots a walmart and a lowes as well and came up with nothing. It should be in the hardware department or paint. I had to get another guy in our group to pick me up one from wherever he got his.

but it works wonders.

I've got a can of Swedish Army weapon's grease, a can of CRC 5-56, a small sharpening stone and a few rags laying around the apartment. <img src="/forum/images/icons/smile.gif" alt="" />

Spritz metal polish. This will take care of light rusting and stains on the blade. I use it with an old soft cotton rag.

I have had good luck with mineral spirits to get the gunk off and MRL's Metalglo polishing paste to make it shiny afterwards. And a plentiful supply of old socks, t-shirts and underwear to use a apply and polish with said substances.
