Anyone in Scottland?

Postby Aaron Pynenberg » Sun Jan 29, 2006 2:17 pm

I am going to be spending 10 days in Scottland soon, mach 6-16th. Is there anyone over there that would like to hook up for some ARMA chat and a workout or two?- Thanks, Aaron Pynenberg GFS, ARMA-Appleton Study Group Leader

Words cannot express how much I hate you. Kidding...kinda. Have a great time. I had a blast when I was there. What parts are you going to?

Well, since you asked...
Of course the castle there in Edinburgh is great...mostly touristy stuff but fun nonetheless. Falkirk and Bannockburn are both close by and are famous battle sites. Stirling is not too far away and has a lot of fun stuff including Stirling Castle and the Wallace national Monument. There is a good helping of the hollywood bs to please the american tourists but if you talk to the people working there and want to know about the real history they are glad to chat. Just remember that he never wore a kilt , the battle of Stirling had a bridge involved and WW never hooked up with the Eng princess. If you got that under your belt you are off to a good start. In the Wallace Monument they have the "Sword of WW" There is tons of debate on the authenticity of this thing (its my opinion that there is virtually no way it could really be his sword) but its interesting nonethe less.
Of course if you can get farther up north then you deffinatley need to visit Culloden. Its a very interesting place. Maybe its just my heritage and affinity for Scottish stuff or being somewhat of a Latter Day Jacobite but its really a spiritual place almost. Dont know how else to explain it. They have a great visitors center and tons of info and weapons to look at. Hope this is of worth!

Hy Aaron! Be sure to get to Inverness. I had a great time there back in 97' while backpacking Ireland/Scotland. The tour then of Inverness Castle was pretty cool, plus you are only a short drive from Loch Ness...you can get in some good fishing if you've got the time Second on the Edinburgh suggestions...great city. Be sure to take one of the "Haunted Edinburgh Underground" tours (old vaults and such...a very D&D experience. Lot's of fun)! Oh and sign on for one of the Pub Crawls of the town...that's tons of fun too, just make sure you can "walk" (not drive) back to your B&B or hotel/hostel

Have fun man! Only about a month and a half of land trapping left for me this year, so about the time you get back I should have time to come visit the crew in Appleton...gotta' try me out one of those new wasters:)

If you can get to London(on a tuesday I believe), try to stop in and see Matt Easton and his guys. They're doing some good work and they're pretty darn decent folks besides.

Also, if you're in Glasgow, You would almost certainly find the Burrell Collection of Glasgow Museums well worth the trip. I certainly enjoyed it.

The Dawn Duelists Society pokes around there. They have classes every Wednesday at 7pm in Harry Miller Hall, Kirk O'Field Church, Brown Street, Edinburgh
